Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiological result of deep frozen allograft used for the acetabular bone defect in revision total hip arthroplasty.

Materials and Methods: Between 2005 and 2006, twenty patients (21 cases) who received allograft stored in surgical bone bank for the acetabular defect in revision total hip arthroplasty were evaluated after minimum 5-year follow-up. There were 15 men and 6 women. The average age was 49.9 years (27~68 years) and the average follow-up was 6 years (5~7.3 years) after surgery. We evaluated Harris hip score and complications for the clinical result and assessed union of allograft, radiolucent line around acetabular cup, and change of acetabular cup as radiological parameters.

Results: The average Harris hip score improved from 52 points to 89.7 points. There were one case of fixation failure and one case of dislocation. All patients except one fixation failure case showed radiographic union of allograft at the mean duration of 8 months after surgery. All acetabular cups except one failure case showed bony stability at the latest follow-up. Radiolucent line less than 2 mm was observed in 1 case which did not progress at the latest follow-up. There was no deep infection case.

Conclusion: The clinical and radiological result of deep frozen allograft used for acetabular defect was satisfactory after minimum 5-year follow-up. Long-term follow up study with more cases about allograft remodeling and complications will be necessary.
